OAKWOOD, GA – The Georgia Department of Transportation announces a road closure as part of the construction of Thurmon Tanner Parkway beginning Tuesday, if weather permits. The new 1.32 mile long four lane divided highway, Thurmon Tanner Parkway phase three, is under construction from State Route 53 to Plainview Road.
The project includes reconstruction of Oakwood Road as it intersects the new roadway. Oakwood Road must be lowered several feet to improve sight distance at the new intersection. Oakwood Road will also be widened to accommodate right and left turn lanes in both directions onto and off of Thurmon Tanner Parkway. A new traffic signal will be installed at the intersections. It will become operational as Thurmon Tanner opens for use.
“While Oakwood Road is closed to traffic, the grade of the intersection will be lowered. A new drainage system will be installed. New right turn lanes and left turn lanes will be created and preliminary work for the new traffic signal will be installed. We have been working at the intersection over the last month to get as much work done as possible before the intersection closes to traffic. By contract, the area can stay closed for 90 days but we hope it is much sooner than that! You will still be able to use each side of Oakwood Road. Just remember you will not be able to use the section that meets Thurmon Tanner Road so you must approach your destination without the need to cross the work zone,” explained DOT Construction Engineer, Randall Davis.
The detour route for Oakwood Road traffic east of Thurmon Tanner Parkway is State Route 53/Mundy Mill Road to Mundy Mill Drive to Oakwood Road. The detour route for Oakwood Road traffic west of Thurmon Tanner Parkway is State Route 53 to Old Oakwood Road to Oakwood Road.
This 1.32 mile project is 35% complete. The completion date for the road work is December 31, 2010.
